Well, I have been nudged into keeping this blog going, and have done to the realization that if I attempt to catch the blog up on the cowl process, I will never get back to regular posting. The lower cowl method was the same as the upper cowl, with the exception of the air inletsContinue reading “After Oshkosh Motivation”

Flippin’ Airplane
Flippin’ Airplane – March 28th 2013 So we left off the last post with a teaser for the bottom cowl. I need to get these pages caught up… In the last post, we were still working on little bits and pieces until we were ready to flip the airplane upside down. In order to makeContinue reading “Flippin’ Airplane”
More Catchup on the Blog…
I am continuing my effort to catch the blog up to the progress of the airplane. There will be a lot of photos here and sparse detail since I want to get current on the blog and get to some of the more exciting things, so here are some more updates. After getting the panelContinue reading “More Catchup on the Blog…”
Its been a while…
Well, it has been a while since I have posted on my blog. Rest assured that there have been things happening in the Garaggio for the last month and a half, I just haven’t kept up with the blog. So the textual detail will be somewhat sparse, but in a few posts I would likeContinue reading “Its been a while…”
Mounting the top Cowl
Well, since we have a rough cowl, now we have to trim and mount it. Trimming was accomplished pretty easily with a tin snips for rough trimming and then sanding to my trim lines. Bonding areas for the mounting flanges along the wings were prep sanded and the cowl was then jigged in place usingContinue reading “Mounting the top Cowl”
WE HAVE A TOP COWL
Well, I will let the photos do most of the talking. But took 10 minutes to pull the cowl off the mold. The mold was unuseable after. The 10 coats of wax still didn’t provide a perfect release. Good thing I only need one top cowl. Clearances were checked and I have less than IContinue reading “WE HAVE A TOP COWL”
Top Cowl Curing
Yesterday I spent the day prepping the top cowl mold for the layup. I added the joggle for the mounting flange. Also, Jon came over and gave it a once over since he hasn’t been in the workshop in a while to see how it was shaping up. Convinced I was ready for a layup,Continue reading “Top Cowl Curing”
Pour Foam/Sand, Repeat, Drywall Mud/Sand, Repeat
It seems that I haven’t been able to get much time in the workshop lately, and when I do that I don’t get much done. This cowl fabrication has been consuming my brain power, and I have not been able to give much thought to working on other parts of the airplane. In the lastContinue reading “Pour Foam/Sand, Repeat, Drywall Mud/Sand, Repeat”
Top cowl shape is getting there
Over the last five or six days, social obligations kept me out of the shop more than I would have liked, but I was able to get a little done. Plus, I was having guests over, so the workshop had to get cleaned too. The shop had quite a few visitors, Weasel and Craig flewContinue reading “Top cowl shape is getting there”
More Cowl Shaping
I didn’t end up with a lot of time yesterday to work on the airplane, but I did want to try to pursue some of the suggestions that I got from James on how to make the cylinder bumps more aerodynamic and smaller. I got the dremmel out and removed parts of the wood splinesContinue reading “More Cowl Shaping”
